How Maryna’s world fell apart

At just 11 years old, Maryna’s world collapsed. Her mother had died, her father had left, and she felt angry at everyone around her.

“I was a complete nightmare. All my inner pain erupted out. I became friends with a street gang that did terrible things,” said Maryna, who is now 17. “There was a lot of pain, tears, uncertainty, and despair.”

“I couldn't open up and trust anyone,” Maryna

Through a chance encounter at a Christian summer camp, Maryna and her siblings met foster parents who welcomed them into their home and eventually adopted them.

At first, it was hard for Maryna to relax. Instead, she remained unhappy and defensive, often slamming doors.

“I couldn't open up and trust anyone,” she said.

Imperfect people learning to love

Over time, she began going to a day centre run by Mission Without Borders and to youth meetings at the local church. It was here that she first began to seriously explore faith and learn the truths of the Bible, asking honest questions and finding meaningful answers.

“Over time, I developed faith in the Good Father and in a large, friendly family – the church – where imperfect people are united by Him and learn to love one another,” Maryna said.

“Tears flowed from my eyes, and it was as if someone had lifted me up and carried me forward.” Maryna

“Tears flowed from my eyes, and it was as if someone had lifted me up and carried me forward. That day, I gave all my sins to God and told Him that I didn’t want to return to them.”

Stepping stones to God

Today, Maryna’s life has been transformed.

“I have confidence and certainty. My anxiety has left me. I believe that sin separated me from God, but now, the main thing I have gained is closeness to God. I’ve become much more joyful and open.”

Maryna is now enrolled on Mission Without Borders’ child sponsorship programme and receives ongoing educational, emotional and practical support. At Sunday school, where Maryna first felt part of the church community, she’s now become a teacher for the younger group, happy that she can serve others.

“Some people were like stepping stones for me, leading me towards Christ. Those people are my new parents, my older brother, and Mission Without Borders,” she said.
