Survival in a time of war

Ukraine was once known as the breadbasket of Europe. Its fertile soil and vast fields fed millions far beyond its borders. Today, that same land tells a different story.

“The land is our life. Everything we grow feeds our family and our animals.” Mariya

Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, farming families across Ukraine have faced devastating challenges. In rural areas, where life has always depended on the land, more than a third of households have lost significant income. Millions now face food insecurity. For families already living on the edge, survival has become even harder.

In a small village in the Sarny region, Viktor and Mariya are raising seven children with another on the way. Their life revolves around the land they cultivate and the animals they care for. Every day is filled with hard work: tending crops, feeding livestock, and doing everything possible to provide for their family.

“The land is our life,” Mariya said. “Everything we grow feeds our family and our animals.”

Seeds that bring hope

Despite their tireless effort, it is not enough. Most of what they produce is consumed at home, leaving little to sell. Basic needs – clothing, school supplies, medical care – are often out of reach.

That’s where Mission Without Borders steps in. Through family sponsorship, Viktor and Mariya have received vital support: food, clothing, school supplies, and essential household items. For their children, even simple things bring joy.

“They love the spaghetti and rice,” Mariya said with a smile. “It’s a real treat for them.”

But the most transformative support has come through the Seeds of Hope project.

With rising food prices, growing their own produce is essential. Through this project, families receive 17 varieties of vegetable seeds, including corn, beets, carrots, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, radishes, parsley, arugula, dill and onions. It’s enough to plant gardens that can feed them from spring through winter. These seeds bring not only food, but dignity, independence, and hope.

A family growing stronger

Thanks to support like this, Viktor and Mariya are not just surviving – they are beginning to rebuild. Plans are underway to provide agricultural equipment that will help them cultivate more land and increase their harvest.

“Your help is not just food or clothing,” Mariya said. “It is kindness that warms our hearts. It reminds us that God cares for us.”

Today, their family is growing stronger. With your help, they can continue to build a future filled with stability and hope.
