After several months of largely peaceful protests in Tirana, demonstrations in Albania have escalated in recent days, with clashes between protesters and police in Tirana, Durrës and other cities. Thousands of young people have taken to the streets to call for political change and voice concerns about corruption, education, employment opportunities and the cost of living. The demonstrations reflect wider frustrations about governance and the challenges facing young people as they seek to build a future in Albania.
The demonstrations, led largely by students and young people, reflect wider concerns about the opportunities available to the next generation and the challenges of building a secure future in Albania. Protesters have called for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, alongside improvements in education, greater employment opportunities and action on corruption.
In Tirana, demonstrations have included clashes between protesters and police, with reports of injuries, arrests and damage to public and private property. Protests have also taken place in other cities, including Durrës, where university and high-school students have joined demonstrations. The situation has contributed to uncertainty for communities across the country.
For families experiencing poverty, wider economic and social pressures can bring additional challenges. When household budgets are already stretched, uncertainty about employment, education and the future can add to the difficulties faced by parents, children and older people. The concerns being raised also highlight the importance of opportunities that enable young people to study, find work and build their lives in their own country.
Monika Qerimi, Director of Mission Without Borders in Albania, said, “When families are struggling to meet their everyday needs, uncertainty about the future can make life even more difficult. Young people need opportunities to learn, work and build their lives with hope.
“At Mission Without Borders, we stand alongside people experiencing poverty, helping them access the support and opportunities they need to move forward and build a more secure future. We do not condone violence, looting or chaos. We all want stability and a return to normality, and we hope for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and mutual understanding. Thank you for keeping Albania and its people in your prayers.”
As the situation develops, we remain mindful of everyone affected, including young people seeking opportunities, families concerned for their children, and those who have been injured or detained. We hope that the concerns being raised will lead to constructive dialogue, respect for human dignity and peaceful solutions.
