A home without warmth

The wind finds its way through the cracks in the walls, rattling the thin sheet of plastic covering the window where glass once was.

Inside, four children huddle together in layers of sweaters, their breath visible in the freezing air.

This is home for Alina, Diana, Ana and Daniel, aged four to nine. There is no kitchen or bathroom, just a small stove that barely burns because firewood is scarce.

Their father, Dumitru, works long days doing odd jobs for local farmers, earning just enough to survive. Like many people of working age in Moldova, he sometimes has to travel abroad to find work, leaving his family behind.

For this family, simply putting enough food on the table can be a daily struggle.

A Christmas surprise

But recently, a wonderful gift arrived at the door.

The four children had been welcomed into Mission Without Borders’ child sponsorship programme, giving them access to vital support including food, clothing, school supplies and regular visits from their local coordinator, Alexandru.

Then, on a bitterly cold afternoon, Alexandru arrived with something extra special: a Christmas box filled with food and treats.

When he knocked on the door, the children rushed to greet him.

“Is that for us?” asked five-year-old Diana, her eyes wide.

“Really, really for us?” added nine-year-old Daniel.

Alexandru smiled. “Yes, dear ones. This box is for your family.”

Inside were simple things many of us take for granted: oil, sugar, rice, flour and pasta, along with small treats for the children.

Svetlana, their mother, placed the box gently on the worn wooden table. Her hands trembled as she opened it.

“This feels like a dream,” she said. “Christmas food… real food. I feel like I can breathe again.”

Food on the table, joy in their hearts

The children gathered around the box, their excitement filling the cold room.

“Mama, look! Pasta! Can we make pasta tonight?” Diana cried.

Four-year-old Alina hugged a jar of jam. “My favourite!” she laughed.

For Svetlana, the gift meant far more than food.

“When you ask me what I wish for this Christmas, my biggest wish is to have food on the table, so I can feed my children,” she said. “I want to see my family healthy and happy around the table. That’s all.”

This Christmas, your gift to Operation Christmas Love can bring that same hope to another family. A Christmas box can mean food on the table, joy for children and the reassurance that they are not forgotten.
